The highly anticipated BlackPink and Selena Gomez single “Ice Cream” is officially here.

Prior to it’s drop at midnight on the 28th, rumors had been circulating on social media between their respective fandoms prior to the official announcement of the collab on August 11. Teasers leading up to the song’s release included a picture of an ice cream truck with a “SelPink” license plate, a cookies & cream remix flavor through the ice cream company Serendipity, merch, BTS photos and clips from the video shoot and finally the 18 second music video clip that released the day before the song.

In less than 24 hours, “Ice Cream” trended at #3 on the iTunes charts and the music video reached the #1 spot on YouTube with over 64 million views.

The music video has a very fun and vibrant, summer vibe to it. While the backdrops play a key factor in the overall style of the video, the props are what really make it fun. From all the different vehicles to slides and of course ice cream cones, the viewer’s eyes are consistently drawn to something through the duration of the video. The director as well as the performers do a solid job of incorporating all of the props without being distracting or taking away from the music. In fact, they make the viewer want to hop in and be a part of that world.

As for the song itself, “Ice Cream” is very cheeky in the way it references ice cream as a dessert when in fact, the song is actually about flirting. Lyrical examples you should be on the lookout for include “Look so good yeah look so sweet,” “Baby you deserve a treat” and “You can double dip cause I know you like me.”  The beat is strong and compliments the lyrics well. Especially for pop fans, it’s that instant head bopper that can quickly turn into a full-blown dance session.

BlackPink has had a busy summer between collabing on “Ice Cream” and on Lady Gaga’s single “Sour Candy,” their single “How You Like That” in anticipation of their upcoming full-length Korean album, and the release of their episodic YouTube reality show “24/365.” Rosé, Lisa and Jisoo also have announced plans to release their own solo projects after the release of the group album.

Gomez has also had a busy summer. Between collabing on “Ice Cream” and on Trevor Daniel’s single “Past Life,” her cooking show on HBO Max (which just got picked up for a second season), producing the film This Is The Year (which also premiered today), and the upcoming launch of her new company, Rare Beauty.

With female collabs dominating 2020, “Ice Cream” is definitely a solid addition. And with all the chaos that has gone on this year, it’s so refreshing to see our favorite artists having fun, creating and collabing for the first time.
