It’s not often that you get to witness the formation of a supergroup within the music industry but when it does happen, it’s without a doubt, something magical.

The most recent to appear out of thin air is Simple Creatures. Consisting of Alex Gaskarth, the front man for the band All Time Low, and Mark Hoppus, the bassist and singer for Blink-182.

Gaskarth and Hoppus have been friends for quite some time now and Gaskarth had openly admitted in previous interviews that after the two had initially met he quickly broke his “hardcore fanboy” phase and the two have had a relatively normal friendship.

It goes without saying that throughout the years they have had a few questionable and funny interactions with one another on social media.

His admiration and love for Hoppus’ work in Blink-182 helped to establish a foundation for their friendship years and years ago. This bond that they created transitioned into the new side project, Simple Creatures.

It was roughly a month ago, Hoppus and Gaskarth posted on their social medial that they have been producing music together for quite some time, in secrecy.

It’s unclear exactly when they had started the Simple Creatures project together but their hard work was evident from the moment they made the initial announcement by accompanying it with the release of the single “Drug”.

Reactions to the new group/song were consistently positive and everyone was losing their minds that two legends within the music industry were producing music together. One fan posting on Alex Gaskarth’s personal account pointing out that she “loves this father/son action”.

John Franceschi, the lead singer for the band You Me At Six, also had some kind words to add to the mix for Hoppus and Gaskarth following the posting of the announcement to Hoppus’ personal account.

It certainly did not take long for Simple Creatures to gain a massive following. Their new song was catchy, pulling elements from different musical genres, and composing a track that was aesthetically pleasing.

A little over 24 hours later following the revealing of the band and their single “Drug”, it managed to reach number 7 on ITunes’ list of new Alternative music just two spots behind the hit song “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco.

Simples Creatures was proving to be far from simple in regards to what the band was producing and it’s newly developed fan base was eager for more, wanting to know what was next on the agenda. Were shows in the works? Are we to expect an EP or a full album? We needed clues!

Luckily, it was only one day later that Gaskarth announced that Simple Creatures would be releasing their debut EP in March. Anticipation had certainly grew, and speculation about the band’s direction musically was at an all time high, no pun intended.

Promo after promo, Hoppus and Gaskarth we’re heavily pushing the Simple Creatures brand and showing that they were having fun with it.

Whether they were posting pictures of the two working together in the studio or another promotion for the band’s single “Drug”, Hoppus and Gaskarth were making the most of their time to spread the word to the world.

Approximately a month after their initial debut, Simple Creatures had broken ground again. This time in a Valentine’s day post with the caption “Eric’s gunnin’ for buns. Watch your six. It’s a strange love. One week”. They were excited to let their fans know this was only the beginning, and more music was coming their way.

What better way to celebrate Valentines day than with your new found love for their alternative music. Or as they like to call their music “Trash-Pop for dummies”.

Exactly one week after their V-day post, they counted down the minutes until the release of the highly anticipated track “Strange Love”. It debuted at approximately 7am EST.

Hand in hand with the revealing of the new track, the world also woke up to Simple Creatures confirming that their EP, also titled “Strange Love” had an official release date of March 29th, roughly 2 months after the debut of the single “Drug”.

“Hooked” was the best possible way of describing what was happening surrounding the group’s success. What Hoppus and Gaskarth created in secrecy was shaping up to become something incredibly special, if it hadn’t achieved that already.

That is what being a supergroup is all about, entertaining an idea that the formation of a band consisting of exceptionally talented and well known artists would yield an unmatchable product. Simple Creatures was generating an unforgettable experience given the short period of time they’ve been active.

They have a way of going against the grain with their alternative/pop style and catchy vibes, so if you haven’t had the opportunity to check them out yet, please stop what you’re doing and listen to them right now! You won’t regret it. I know their fan base certainly hasn’t.

At Second Society Report, we are more than excited for the release of their EP “Strange Love” and hope to hear another single before March 29th.

What do you guys think about Simple Creatures and should we expect another single before the EP release in March?
