State Champs celebrated ten years as a band this week, and in honor of their decade of achievements, the band held a live stream to celebrate and reminisce alongside fans and some very special guests.
Beginning at 7pm last night, band members Derek DiScanio, Evan Ambrosio, Tyler Szalkowski, and Ryan Scott Graham reunited via Zoom to discuss the past 10 years and bring fans through the timeline of their formation, some notable tours, and release some new music.
Kicking it off with a brief background of DiScanio and Salkowski and how they inevitably recruited Graham and Ambrosio to State Champs, the band recounted various touring stories- including their Truffle Shuffle Tour, where they met and befriended their first guest of the night: Brendan Murphy of Counterparts.
Following Murphy’s retelling of the band’s friendship beginnings, the group recounted the writing and subsequent recording of Murphy’s song “Winners Shoes (and I’m Not Crazy)” in the green room after of one of their shows.
Following Murphy- and after recounting several other tours, including their “largest tour to date” with 5 Seconds of Summer- the band welcomed their second guest, Neck Deep’s Ben Barlow.
Joining the band to discuss their meeting in 2013 and Warped Tour 2014- in addition to his newly grown out hair- Barlow shared stories of lost luggage, small vans, and the craziness of overseas shows.
Sticking to the much respected “timeline” (which DiScanio insisted everyone followed several times throughout the stream) the five discussed their infamous 2016 World Tour, which sold out every date except for the first one in Montreal- where a crazed fan demanded “ANYTHING” from Neck Deep’s bus post-show.
And though the tour happened four years ago, DiScanio spiked viewers hopes when he suggested the band re-create that tour sometime in the future- getting nods from all three band mates and Barlow.
Barlow then gave viewers a special surprise when he busted out an acoustic guitar and performed a cover of Champs’ “Losing Myself,” before giving the metaphorical (and literal) microphone back to the band.
Following Barlow’s cameo, the band debuted a new “Quaranteem” episode of their web series “Shot Boys,” which has been on hiatus since late 2018.
The episode, which focused on the band members coping with quarantine while trying to figure out how to confront Graham about hosting a party, starred a variety of familiar faces, including former Champs member Tony Diaz- who assured the band they were living their best life in “Puerto Rico” after becoming “very rich.”
In addition to their special guests, the band also treated fans by performing various tracks from throughout their career, including “Hard to Please,” “All or Nothing,” and “Criminal (Unplugged)” from their upcoming EP, “Unplugged.” Along with a cover of The Band CAMINO’s “Haunted,” and a live drums only version of their song “Frozen,” featuring not only Ambrosio, but also Josh Manuel of Issues.
But the best treat of the night came two and a half hours into the stream when the band debuted their new single “Crying Out Loud,” alongside a new music video that debuted publicly earlier this morning.
Then, after nearly three hours of banter, reminiscing, and special guests, the stream came to a close with a Q&A hosted by MTV’s Kaitlyn Vella.
Taking questions from the live stream chat, the band let viewers know their latest TV binges (“The Office” and “Schitt’s Creek” being fan favorites), their favorite tracks to play live (“Secrets” and “Frozen” being favorites across the board) and even their dream tour lineups, which got some wholesome answers from the boys.
“People I like. Anyone that I can get along with,” Graham shared. “Like anyone I can sit and have a conversation with. Which I know is not the answer you want, you want me to name some bands.”
“There are few bands we’ve toured with that we haven’t gotten along with,” DiScanio added. “I think I’d say All Time Low, State Champs, Neck Deep and Grayscale. How about that?”
(We would like to take a moment to say we would LOVE to buy tickets to that tour… 2021- you’re up!)
And while the questions could have gone on hours longer, the band ended the Q&A and subsequently the live stream by announcing the winners of their Charity Raffle- which raised money for the NAACP, Reclaim the Block, and BailProject.org.
But before officially signing off, the band made sure to plug their new text line, in addition to reminding fans to get out and vote in their local and federal elections.
You can stream “Crying Out Loud” and “Criminal” Unplugged now, and be sure to pre-order the new “Unplugged” EP- available to stream worldwide on August 14th.
