Cherophobia: The fear or anxiety caused by feelings of happiness or joy. The fear of the sadness that comes after experiencing joy. Alternatively, “Cherophobia,” the newest single by Australian Wayside.

A duo consisting of vocalist Thomas Davenport and guitarist Josh Ehmer, Wayside have made their official return to the music scene this year with the release of their new singles “Shine (Onto Me)” and today’s “Cherophobia.”

Inspired by their love of classic alternative emo bands, such as Title Fight, Citizen, and Deftones, Wayside have dedicated their new era to honoring the bands that paved the sonic paths before them- focusing in on extending the emo renaissance that has emerged over the past few years.

And with driving percussion coupled with attention grabbing guitar and smooth but potent vocals that navigate an agonizing battle with anxiety, their new single does just that.

“It’s about believing that I’m the best version of myself when I’m alone. I typically go a little insane when I care a lot for a person, and I don’t like myself when that happens,” Davenport shared of the track.

“When I’m alone, no one’s thoughts, words nor actions can influence my mind; There’s also an element of choosing to be alone, rather than settling for something that is mediocre / I’m not certain about.”

In an exclusive feature with FLOOD Magazine that debuted this afternoon, the band also shared the track’s music video alongside a playlist of tracks that inspired the single. You can check out the full article here, and the playlist here.
