If you are looking for an up and coming punk band that has deep cutting lyricism and a sense of hard hitting angst that will leave you re-thinking your entire attitude towards both yourself and the world around you- look no further than London based quartet Delaire The Liar.
First landing on my radar just under two days ago, Delaire The Liar are the alternative scene’s latest hidden gem on their way to stardom- with their new EP EAT YOUR OWN already fully taking over my playlists and YouTube search history.
Released on Friday, the six track EP features singles “HALLOWEEN,” “FURNACE,” and “NO ENTRY,” along with newer tracks “NO ACCIDENT,” “NO THANKS,” and “DOG.”
Opening on the track “NO ENTRY,” EAT YOUR OWN immediately grabs the listener’s attention by throwing them straight into the fire. Exploring the relationship between mental illness, societal standards, and asking for help, the track kicks off with a chorus of screams and the very first clean vocal asking “how do you know if your kid is at risk? How do you notice?” before diving into an honest recollection of suicide attempts and internal struggles.
Leaving nothing on the table, “NO ENTRY,” immediately sets the tone for the remaining five songs. This EP is going to be contemplative and direct- and if you aren’t prepared to be faced with this reality, this track is your warning sign.
The album then flows into “FURNACE,” my second favorite of the release. A song that begs the listener and its subject to think introspectively rather than acting irrationally, “FURNACE” is an ode to healing, and encouraging those around you to find a path that leads them out of the darkness rather than further into the fire.
With an almost call and response style duet provided by the band’s vocalist Ffin Colley and bassist Em Lodge, the single wraps you in a sense of familiarity and comfort. This is a safe space, and you are welcome to come as you are and find hope between the lines of this song.
The mid section of the EP then further drives home this belief as tracks “NO THANKS” and “HALLOWEEN” explore the hypocrisy and fear that comes with knowing you need help but refusing to ask for it.
Singing “it looks painful, to know that you’re capable of, caring for everyone else but sparing yourself that same act of kindness your chemicals work with violence,” in “NO THANKS” and then “I would trade anything; You can take my life instead ‘cause I hear hell ain’t all that bad,” in “HALLOWEEN,” the group use their intense vocal styling and high energy instrumentals to captivate listeners and drive home the message that we aren’t all inherently destined for failure.
And while these lyrics read as somber, the band’s delivery is what truly drives home the messaging. Keeping an assertive tone that feels both like a call out for those who lack the ability to practice self care and a reminder that it’s okay to not maintain an image of perfection at all times, Delaire The Liar don’t tip toe around the heavy subjects.
“A record of dichotomy, a fusion of joy and trauma; [EAT YOUR OWN is] a celebration of being together; an elegy to being apart,” the band shares. “EAT YOUR OWN is about duality, it’s about people, how we mechanise grief and trauma any way we can to stay engaged with our surroundings and the people we love, to be attentive even when we can’t focus on ourselves.”
“It can manifest as desperation, pleading, fury, humour and hysteria but irrespective of the complexities of human emotion, from the light to the dark it all resides in one body and we have the capacity for every outcome. Both sides of the coin.”
Closing the EP on the softer “NO ACCIDENT,” which was the latest track to be released with a video prior to EAT YOUR OWN‘s release, and the energetic “DOG,” Delaire The Liar close the album out with a double punch.
Using the track “NO ACCIDENT” to explore an unconditional love seeped in self doubt and insecurity, and “DOG” as a ready-to-fight style ode to standing your ground and fighting back against injustice, these two songs perfectly represent Delaire The Liar’s duality. They are more than just a punk rock band screaming about mental illness or harm- but instead a multi faceted band that use their tracks to explore the human condition and better understand the world around them- welcoming the listener on the journey the whole way there.
A true album built out of passion, EAT YOUR OWN is what I anticipate to be just one of many hits to come from Delaire The Liar- and I cannot wait to see where 2022 brings them.
