2020 is the year of Demi Lovato.
Just a little over one month after the pop star made her return to music at the Grammy Awards back in January, Demi has released yet another brand new single titled “I Love Me.”
Released at midnight “I Love Me” is Lovato’s latest powerhouse anthem, all about finding inner peace beyond the need for a romantic partner or substances to feel whole.
The self love anthem takes a different approach than Lovato’s previous self love/body-positive anthem “Confidence,” by taking the focus away from her appearance and placing it more on her other values- including her health, happiness, and overall well being.
“When I go into the next chapter I’ve never really done the full like feeling comfortable in yourself, like I don’t have to be in a one piece leotard on stage,” Lovato shared with Ashley Graham on her podcast “Pretty Big Deal.”
“I’m tired of running myself into the ground with workouts and extreme dieting. Like I thought the past few years was recovery from an eating disorder when it was actually just completely falling into it.”
In addition to the song itself dropping, Lovato also released a music video for the track, and it’s one worth watching.
Starting out with the singer at home looking through magazines before getting into a fight with her two alter egos- the evil of which she destroys in a badass jiu-jitsu battle- the video takes fans on an emotional roller coaster as they watch Lovato say goodbye to her past selves.
Once the setting changes to the streets of presumably Los Angeles, Lovato walks past several iterations of her career and personal life- including her time on Barney, in Camp Rock, with the Jonas Brothers, and lastly when she overdosed in 2018.
Ending with a massive dance scene as Lovato watches a recently married couple sprint past her, the singer returns to a group of her closest friends (including real life best friends Matthew Scott Montgomery and rapper Sirah) and smiles.
Maybe “I Love Me” is enough.
