If there was ever a perfect year to dedicate a bit more time to reconnecting with the Earth around us, 2020 is the year. And though it may seem difficult to find the time or motivation to ground yourself and take a mindful stroll outdoors, Michaela Bekenn’s debut single is here to encourage you to find the beauty in the world around you.

“The Earth Has Music,” which dropped at the end of last month is a beautiful reminder to take stock in the world around you and to find the music within your soul.

With an indie folk instrumental backing and Bekenn’s passionate vocals leading the listener on a journey of mindfulness, the song is almost a 2020 take on “Colors of the Wind,” from Disney’s Pocahontas. Referencing the changing of Earth’s landscapes and how they compare to growing up and changing as a person- the track encourages those who hear it to take stock of their own achievements and growth while also connecting to the world around them.

Finding music in the Earth may mean different things to different listeners, but Bekenn shares the idea that through reconnecting with the world around us we may learn more about ourselves.

Bekenn also released a music video to accompany the track that features her singing, dancing and generally appreciating the land around her all while paying homage to the Earth and the peoples to whom the land belongs.

Following the video she shared the following message:

“The land on which this video was conceived and filmed is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today.

This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Agreement.

Today this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

We are grateful to live, work and create on this land on which we are guests.”
